State of the art cancer techniques
The Royal Marsden is at the forefront in the development and use of new radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgical techniques for the treatment of cancer:
CyberKnife – A robotic radiosurgery system that can destroy inoperable or surgically complex tumours with targeted, high dose radiation.
Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) – A specialised radiotherapy technique that shapes the radiotherapy beam to the tumour, reducing damage to surrounding tissues and allowing higher doses to be used.
Volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) – An advanced IMRT technique that reduces even further the risk of damage to surrounding tissues and involves shorter treatment times. The Royal Marsden as the first hospital in the UK to use VMAT.
da Vinci robotic surgery systems – The Royal Marsden was the first hospital in the UK to introduce the da Vinci S robotic surgical system back in 2007. The robot allows surgeons to perform minimally invasive surgical techniques for treating prostate cancer. The Royal Marsden has also become the first hospital in England to get the latest version of the robotic surgical system, the da Vinci Xi in 2015. This piece of innovative piece of machinery allows robotic surgeons to operate on other areas of the body and train surgeons of the future.
Neo-adjuvant chemotherapy – The Royal Marsden are pioneers and experts in the use of chemotherapy to shrink breast tumours prior to surgery
Critical Care Unit – This 19 bed unit is the only one of its type in the UK, with two rooms designed for teenagers and young adults offering the highest standard of care.
Oak Centre for Children and Young People – The Oak Centre for Children and Young People is one of the largest comprehensive children and young people’s cancer centres in Europe. It was opened in September 2011 by the President of The Royal Marsden, HRH The Duke of Cambridge, with his wife, HRH The Duchess of Cambridge.
