The incidence of oesophageal cancer is just under 10 per 100,000 of the population and, in the mid and lower oesophagus there is a male predominance of approximately 1.7:1. In the high/upper third oesophagus the sex incidence of oesophageal cancer is reversed with a femal predominance for post-cricoid growths (those in the low neck). The disease has a similar incidence in the USA and Western Europe, but is ten fold more common is some geographical locations, for example some areas in China and some Eastern Mediterranean locations.
