Here is a selection of terms which are relevant to the diagnosis and treatment of melanoma.
Immunotherapy :
This refers to the administration of substances that are designed to enhance the patient’s response against his tumour, in the same fashion as the human body fights an infection or rejects a transplanted organ from another human or animal.
Vaccines are one method of enhancing this reaction (and usually use some degraded part of the melanoma cell – presenting it to the patient in another form such as to raise the body’s awareness of its ‘foreignness’ or alien nature.
