Screening for head and neck cancer

Screening for head and neck cancer is not routinely performed as the disease is,overall, rare but in those patients with predisposing factors (e.g. alcohol, poor oral hygeine, smokers and betel nut chewers) an awareness of the importance of acting on any lump or poorly healing ulcer in this region must be emphasised to patients and healthcare workers (e.g. dentists) such that the condition is picked up early. Similarly, a patient who develops a hoarse voice that does not settle in a month or so requires a specialist referrral and probable mirror/fibreoptic laryngoscopy, as this is how laryngeal cancer most commonly presents.
