A rounded mass of lymphatic tissue that is surrounded by a capsule and 'sifts' the lymph emrging from an organ (e.g. the lymph nodes in the armpit/axilla are sifting the lymph emerging from the arm). The functional unit of the lymph node is the lymphocyte - a white cell that is also found in the blood and bone marrow and is criticial to the healthy immune defence system.
