Pegylated Liposomal Doxorubicin versus Topotecan chemotherapy for relapsed ovarian cancer

Although the first line of chemotherapy for advanced ovarian cancer is well established (namely taxol and platin), for patients who relapse the optimal alternative chemotherapy is still debated. In a recently reported study (J Clin Oncol 2001; vol 19: 3312-22) the relative merits of the pegylated liposomal formulation of doxorubicin (a drug also known as adriamycin) versus topotecan were explored. The doxorubicin formulation seemed to have slightly better responses rates and the toxicity was low. This is important for those women relapsing after first line platin/taxol chemotherapy.
