In a recently reported trial from the USA Head and Neck Intergroup, there was an advantage in survival from adding concurrent cis-platinum chemotherapy to the standard radiotherapy prescription, in patients with locally advanced squamous head and neck cancer. Having said this, there is an increase in the toxicity of the concurrently chemo-radiotherapy treated patients, and this is a concern in all concurrent chemotherapy and radiotherapy trials at present.
