HCA Hospitals: Cancer treatment in London

HCA logo

HCA owns six of London's most well-respected private hospitals and has the largest and most advanced private cancer treatment network anywhere in the UK. Their hospitals are: The Harley Street Clinic, The Lister Hospital, London Bridge Hospital, The Portland Hospital, The Princess Grace Hospital and The Wellington Hospital.

They also have a specialist cancer unit at UCH, Harley Street at University College Hospital (UCH), for the treatment of blood and bone cancers.

HCA works with leading cancer specialists from London NHS teaching and international hospitals that are pioneering research into new treatments. They spend millions of pounds every year to buy the very latest equipment and medical expertise for their patients, as well as making available all cancer treatment drugs and therapies.

They treat every type of cancer and because they have six major hospitals, closely linked, every patient has access to this very large and high calibre pool of expertise, knowledge and resources.

Each year HCA sees and treats more than 20,000 people, from screening through early stages to the treatment of even the most rare and severe forms of cancer. They call this their Gold Standard cancer care.

Gold Standard Cancer Care

  • Waiting times between initial consultation and diagnosis and between diagnosis and commencement of treatment are kept to the absolute minimum possible – in many instances, patients can be seen the same day.

  • Every patient is directly under the care of a leading consultant who has a current or recent NHS post and is practising within their area of sub-specialty. Surgeons work in different hospitals across London and so share ideas and best practice. They also share and adopt best practice with the world’s top cancer centres.

  • Every patient is cared for by a multi-disciplinary (diagnostic and therapeutic) medical team with high level and up-to-the-minute training and experience in their particular field of medicine and cancer care.

  • They have extensive knowledge, expertise and resources for screening, prevention and treatment of all types of cancer in adults and children.

  • All patients are given fast access to the latest drugs and treatments according to their clinical need, even if these drugs are not widely available in the UK.*

  • They buy the latest equipment to aid diagnosis and treatment. HCA has more of the latest generation technology than any other cancer centre in Europe. Examples include PET CT scans for the most reliable diagnosis, the UK’s first CyberKnife system, the Perfection Gamma Knife and Linear Accelerators, all used for minimally-invasive and pin-point accurate radiotherapy. In the last five years we have spent £150 million on our facilities and will be investing a further £24 million in the next 18 months on cancer services alone.

  • Their surgeons pioneer the use of non-invasive surgical techniques for the removal of cancerous tumours allowing faster and more complete patient recovery.

  • HCA has formed unique and successful partnerships with NHS teaching hospitals to provide specialist private centres for cancer treatment, including University College Hospital and St Batholomew’s Hospital.

  • Through partnerships with the NHS, they take part in programmes to further research into cures for cancer. Patients are offered the opportunity of ground-breaking new treatments, still in the trial phase, that may become the cancer drugs of the future.

  • Their personalised patient-focused care programme puts the patient in control of the decisions affecting their treatment and takes into account factors such as family, lifestyle, work, cultural, social, financial and psychological needs.

  • HCA create a clean, safe, comfortable environment where patients can undergo treatment with dignity and privacy.

Cancer screening programmes

It is now proven that early detection and treatment can significantly improve the outcomes of cancer.

As London’s premier private cancer network, HCA hospitals have wide expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.  Their specialists and medical teams hold, or have recently held, posts at London’s top teaching hospitals and they have helped us to develop these cancer screens to use the latest techniques and a very high standard of assessment.
