Charity raises awareness of male breast cancer

Breast Cancer Care
Breast cancer in males is very rare but men need to be aware of their health so that they can receive timely cancer treatment if necessary, a charity has said.

For every man that is diagnosed with breast cancer, there are 140 cases of the disease in women, and Breast Cancer Care revealed that awareness of male breast cancer is lower than that of more common diseases.

Clinical nurse specialist Maria Leadbeater commented: "It is important men are aware of their general health and the more understanding and awareness there is by men on health issues generally can only be a good thing."

Ms Leadbeater revealed that staff and volunteers who give talks on behalf of the charity always mention that, although it is uncommon, the condition can develop in men.

She also pointed out that, while obesity is a breast cancer risk factor for postmenopausal women, there is no evidence to suggest that being overweight increases the risk of breast cancer in men.
